Zephaniah a true prophet of God who faced a corrupt and godless nation Judah. Although identified with the chosen people, such a nation could not endure, for the LORD is a just God who is no respecter of persons. Far to the northeast was the mighty Assyria, which was to be used by the LORD as his instrument to bring about Judah’s destruction. This destruction would be a day in which the Lord’s righteousness would be vindicated. It would truly be a day of the LORD.

Zephaniah rightly seeks to inspire fear of that day in his hearers and appeals for repentance. He points out that through such judgment, mercy will come to those whom God truly intends to deliver. The pure remnant when it has been delivered will sing the praise of the just LORD who dwells in her midst.
