The epistle of second Timothy is chronologically last in order of the three Pastoral Epistles. It breathes a different atmosphere from the other two. In 1 Timothy and Titus, Paul Apostle is free to make travel plans and to move about at will. In this letter, he is a prisoner and the end is rapidly approaching – see Chapter 4:6. When Paul was arrested the second time and for what reason are not known. He writes second Timothy apparently from Rome where he is awaiting execution.

All have forsaken him but only Luke was left. He is even more concerned, in view of his own circumstances, that Timothy fulfills the ministry to which he was called. The content of the Epistle is rich and varied and includes a number of touching appeals especially in view of Paul’s situation. Four specific charges are addressed to Timothy that have to do primarily with his personal life as a minister. The threat of false teaching looms large in this letter as in the first Epistle to Timothy.
