In the book of Proverbs wisdom begins with God: His centrality is assumed though the wise upright, righteous, and godly are equated. They are those who trust and know their God and mirror this by their just and loving conduct toward their fellows in accordance with divinely- approved principles, good and bad are linked with reward and penalty, because God embodies in Himself both love and justice and so must promote good and obviate evil.
The positive and negative standards in Proverbs afford a valuable test of personal conduct. Christ enjoins His disciples to be wise as serpent in (Matthew 10:16) The wisdom of Proverbs is the old testament pendant to the many practical exhortation in the New Testament letters a fact true of both the great fourteen fold discourse and the vast series of pithy instructions and observation of which most of Proverbs consists, bearing on many aspects of our daily life. Though many were ascribed as the authors e.g Solomon, Agur, Lemuel etc but the key issue is the book is like a guide to living. It is good to teach and correct the young, even the old.
