Speaking for God, Malachi stood as one of the most significant dividing points in history. Prophets have come and gone, but the culture about him did not bear the impress of their labours. The priests were corrupt see Chapters 1:6-2:9 and the people, with some exceptions, were no better – see Chapter 2;10-4:3. But God was still on the throne – Sovereign. He was the father and master and a great King,The heavenly governor, the giver of covenant and commandments. As the God of judgment, He had brought about the doom of Edom. His curse was upon the unfaithful priest and those who inter-married with the heathen. There would be swift judgment. The day of the LORD would consume the wicked. Test as the God of grace, He would bless the faithful remnant, for a story of grace behind His love for Jacob. His covenant with Levi, His forbearance with the sons of Jacob. His offer to those who have been faithful stewards, the book of remembrance, the rising of the sun of righteousness and the promised coming of Elijah. The Day of the LORD was coming, said Malachi. Itwould be a glorious day for the righteous but a day of destruction for the wicked. Yet between the lines can be read these words of grace “Turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways, for why will ye die. 0 house of Israel” -see Ezekiel 33:11.
