The great theme of the Gospel of Luke is ‘JESUS CHRIST IS THE DIVINE SAVIOUR’. From the very beginning, everything is focused on this supreme fact. Even before His birth, the angel as messenger of God commands Mary to call Him Jesus (which means The Lord saves) see Chapter 1:31.
To the shepherds, the angel brought the ‘good tiding of great joy, – see Chapter 2:20 that in the city of David is born ‘a saviour’ which is Christ the lord-see chapter 2:11. And in the first public announcement which Jesus made regarding His mission, he explicitly taught that He is the divine savior of whom the Old Testament scriptures wrote – 4:17-21. From that moment we see how Jesus reveals Himself as the Divine Redeemer who came to save those that are lost. He saves from the power of evil spirit- see Chapter 4:33-36, from severe illness, -Chapter 4:38-40 from leprosy-Chapter 5:20-26. The Gospel of Luke further shows that Jesus as the Almighty savior has the power and divine authority to raise the dead-Chapter 7:12-17.
Being one with God the father, He also has the power over nature to be able to save His disciples from a raging storm-Chapter 8:22-25 and the multitudes from hunger-Chapter 9:11-17.
After Jesus has revealed Himself as the Almighty Saviour and after the Apostles confessed Him as the Christ-Chapter 9:18-20, The Lord began to teach His followers that in order to be their Divine Saviour, He must suffer and die-Chapter 9:22.
The word of Jesus in Chapter 19:10,The son of man lost’, crystallizes the wonderful message of the Gospel of Luke. He shows that Jesus came as Saviour in a universal sense for people of all ages and conditions, for Jews 1:13 and 2:10, for Samaritans-Chapter 9:51-56, for Heathen 2:32, 3:6, and 38, for publicans, sinners and outcasts-Chapter 7:37-50, as well as for respectable people-Chapter 7:36, for the poor-Chapter 1:53 as well as forthe rich-Chapter 18:2 and 23:50.
At the same time, our Lord urgently warned people that although He came to save and notto destroy, all those who refuse to be saved by Him would bring terrible suffering upon themselves – Chapter 19:27 and 41:44
The Gospel of Luke proclaims the glad tiding that Jesus not only claimed to be the Divine Saviour, but that he revealed Himself as the Almighty Redeemer who is the only begotten son of the father, through His resurrection and ascension-Chapter 24:5053. He finally proved the truth of His claim and the genuiness of His self- revelation as the savior of the world, sent, approved, and equipped by God-see Chapter 4:17- 21, 10:22
