As far back as early eighteen century the book of first and second Timothy and that of Titus have been designated as Pastoral Epistles. Though not completely adequate this designation indicates the practical nature of the subject matter treated in these epistles.

Timothy, being a very young and inexperienced Pastor was left in charge of the important church at Ephesus. Apostle Paul being his spiritual father writes to encourage and to instruct him in relation to such practical subjects as public worship, qualification of church officials and confrontation of false teaching in the church. He also instructs Timothy about relation to various groups in the church including widows, elders, slaves and false teachers.

The epistle of first Timothy therefore contains much information about the problems of the developing church in the third quarter of the first century. The letter reveals all through the personal warmth of the great apostle for his son in the faith and his emphasis on the one great qualification for Christ’s minister, which is godliness.
