The Colossians had an exaggerated regard for the observance of rites and ceremonies and they also indulged in some form of worshipping of angels. They were infected, therefore, with a heresy which seems to have had both Jewish and Gnostic elements. Paul deals with their problem by setting before them the incomparableness of Christ.

In a notable passage, he speaks of what the LORD accomplished in redemption and reconciliation and of His Pre-eminence. Christ is ”The image of the invisible God’. Through Him all things were created. He is the head of the church” thus, Apostle Paul presents to them the Christ he preached. Because Christ is for such surpassing excellence and because He has fully won their salvation, Paul can beseech them to abstain from the fancies they have been pursuing. He contrasts the new life in Christ with their former sinful manner of life and urges them to practice Christian virtues. Because they are Christians, they must regulate all their relationship in terms of their Christian faith. Therefore, he speaks of the way wives and husbands, children and parents, slaves and masters should behave towards one another. He reminds them that Christian should behave wisely before unbelievers. The letter comes to an end with a series of greetings.
